The HughesNet® System

The hardware for the HughesNet high speed Internet service you will receive1 consists of the HUGHES® HN9000S modem and power supply, the one watt radio transmitter (mounted on the dish antenna), and the dish antenna (less than 30 inches across). This hardware utilizes the next generation technology discussed on this page as well as the SPACEWAY™ page. The next-generation technology provides you with increased speed, greater reliability, and automatic signal power adjustments to mitigate bad weather conditions.

HN Performance Enhancing Technology

Hughes comprehensive package of acceleration and compression technologies is embedded in every HN satellite modem. The result is a dramatically improved throughput and response time through mitigation of satellite delay, meaning customers experience wireline or better performance of broadband IP applications.

For well over a decade,Hughes has led the industry with innovative acceleration and compression technologies and has been awarded several pattens. These technologies enable Hughes to offer comprehensive broadband networking solutions that stand apart from those of other telecom providers - whether satellite or terrestrial.

Every HN satellite modem incorporates the following features:

• TCP accerelation
• HTTP accerelation
• Header compression
• Payload compression
• DNS caching

The HN satellite modem utilize Hughes patented Performance Enhancing Proxy (PEP) to optimize the performance of many widely used Internet proptocols. PEP improves performance of TCP by transparently converting it into a satellite-friendly protocol upon entering the satellite network and restoring it to TCP prior to leaving the network.

In addition to TCP acceleration, HughesNet implements Hughes patented TurboPage™ software to accelerate hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) traffic.

Working in tandem with HNS' acceleration technology are Hughes advanced data and header compression algorithms and DNS caching techniques, which result in more efficient bandwidth utilization and a superior user experience.
